Draft Center

The Draft Center is the keystone of Newsroom Director, where the entire article drafting process takes place. From giving out story assignments to actually writing and editing the articles, the Draft Center is where your staffers will spend the most time.

Draft Center Home Page

Each staffer, based on their position and permissions, can see certain portions of the left navigation. For instance, reporters will most likely only see the "My Assignments," while editors-in-chief can probably see all of the above — it's completely up to you.
1) "View Staff Assignments" shows all story assignments for the current issue.
2) "Work on Current Drafts" leads staffers to where they can write, save, and submit their articles.
3) "Reviewed/Edited Drafts" shows staffers their edits that their editors have made to their drafts.
4) "Draft History" allows staffers to view previous versions of their drafts.
5) "View Report" shows a detailed report on students' progress (see below).
6) "Review/Edit" drafts is where editors edit other staffers' submitted drafts. It's simple to customize who edits which drafts, etc. (see below).
7) "View All Documents" allows editors to view all drafts and draft edits in their section(s) (see below).
8) "Story Assignments" is self-explanatory — story assignments are created and assigned there (see below).
9) "Issues/Volumes" allows for the creation of new issues (and/or volumes) (see below).
10) "Draft Deadlines" is where the deadlines for each draft stage are set. For example, draft #1, #2, etc. (see below).
11) The current information bar at the top of the Draft Center provides the current draft stage and allows staffers to browse between issues.

Draft Center Story Assignments

1) Adding a new story assignment is very easy — write a story topic and brief description, select the section, and choose a staffer to assign it to (the list is broken up into those with and without assignments already).
2) View, edit, and delete all story assignments for this issue.
3) Clicking the "Printable Version" button generates a good-looking print-out of the story assignments to, for instance, post in the actual newsroom if desired.

Draft Center Writing

1) When drafting their articles, staffers can click "View/Save TXT File" to do just that — view or save their draft as a .txt (text) file.
2) Clicking on the story topic brings up the information entered when creating the story assignment (topic, description, section, and staffer).
3) The draft number of the below draft is displayed for convenience.
4) Spell Check is provided as an easy way to ensure the accuracy of the spelling of the words in the draft.
5) This box is where the staffers actually compose their articles.
6) If the staffer leaves a note to the editors in this box, it will show up when they edit the draft.
7) Saving the draft is just like clicking "Save" in any application — it will save the current content so it can be worked on later.
8) "Submit to Editors" is used when the staffer is ready to "turn in" their draft. By clicking this button, the draft will be sent to the respective editors and the staffer can begin working on the next draft.

Draft Center Reviewing

1) A notification appears at the top, alerting you of any unreviewed drafts.
2) The "Your Unreviewed Drafts" box contains drafts you have not yet edited. Editing a draft is as simple as writing one — the draft's content is pulled up in a box and you make changes directly to the story. Newsroom Director does all the mark-ups for you.
3) "Your Reviewed Drafts" enables you to view old draft edits from the current issue.

Draft Center Reviewed Draft

1) Information about the draft edit is displayed at the top.
2) Staffers can view their edited drafts and make changes quickly. Words taken out are marked out in red, words added are in green, and "notes" the editors left are in blue.

Draft Center Viewing All Assignments

Staffers can view all assignments in their respective section(s) by selecting the assignment, the draft, and/or the draft edit(s).

Draft Center Report

1) Those you choose to give access to can view an extensive report on the students' drafts in their respective section(s).
2) View the report by a certain draft or specification (on-time drafts, late drafts, unsubmitted drafts, or all drafts).
3) Easy-to-see boxes mark each student's draft as on-time, late, or unsubmitted.

Draft Center Issues/Volumes

1) View all issues/volumes in your account.
2) Add a new issue by selecting the begin and end dates, the issue number, and the volume number.

Draft Center Deadlines

1) View all draft deadlines for each issue/volume in your account.
2) Add a new draft deadline by selecting the due date, the draft number, and the issue/volume.
